Hong Kong visa photo requirementsOfficial paper range and online file rules

Paper applications accept 40–45 mm wide by 50–55 mm high. Online applications require one recent colour photo up to 5 MB, but the government does not publish one universal pixel size or background colour for the visitor route.

Requirements-only. The checker reads local dimensions and does not edit, upload, or store the image.

Paper form range

40–45 × 50–55 mm

Printed directly on the official ID 1003A form.

Online upload

One colour file, ≀5 MB

JPEG, PDF, GIF, PNG, or TIF.

Pixel dimensions

No official visitor value

The official service does not publish one pixel dimension.

Hong Kong specification note

The official visitor sources do not publish a universal online pixel size, background colour, or head-height rule. The separate travel-document page publishes a 40 × 50 mm white-background standard, while paper visitor forms use a 40–45 × 50–55 mm range. PassPhoto treats this as requirements-only because those sources do not establish one safe edited-output workflow for visa or entry-permit photos.

Official visitor rules

What the government actually publishes

The visit/transit page and guidebook require a recent applicant photo. The paper form adds an acceptable size range, while GovHK publishes the online formats, one-file count, colour requirement, and 5 MB ceiling.

Photo count

One recent photo

Required for both the official visitor application checklist and online service.

Paper width

40–45 mm

The ID 1003A form accepts a photo no narrower than 40 mm and no wider than 45 mm.

Paper height

50–55 mm

The same form accepts a photo no shorter than 50 mm and no taller than 55 mm.

Online file size

Up to 5 MB

The limit is per uploaded file in the official visit/transit online service.

Online file types

JPEG, PDF, GIF, PNG, TIF

The official service lists these formats and requires colour for documents with photos.

Official pixel rule

Not published

The visitor service does not set one universal pixel dimension for the uploaded photo.

The applicant photo is mandatory. JPEG, PDF, GIF, PNG, and TIF are accepted, with a maximum of 5 MB per file. No visitor-specific pixel dimension is listed.

Official online instructions

Paper ID 1003A

Affix one 40–45 × 50–55 mm photo

The box on page one says the image must be at least 40 × 50 mm and no larger than 45 × 55 mm. A 40 × 50 mm print fits the stated range.

Postal or overseas route

Original form and photo may be required

Immigration guidance says a fax may start the process, but the original completed form and required photograph must then be sent. Overseas offices can have their own handling arrangements.

Official submission guidance

Hong Kong requirements-only route protection

Public tools often merge passport, travel-document, visitor-visa, and online-upload rules into one edited file. PassPhoto keeps Hong Kong requirements-only: it does not upload, crop, resize, retouch, replace the background, store, submit, or prepare Hong Kong visa photos.

Local-only checker

Check the 40:50 shape without editing

This browser check reads the selected image dimensions and compares only the 40 × 50 mm preparation ratio. It does not validate acceptance, resize the file, change the background, or upload the image.

We read only its pixel dimensions to compare the crop with the 40 × 50 mm preparation ratio. The image is not uploaded, edited, or stored.

Public result conflicts

Why PassPhoto does not expose a Hong Kong upload preset

Current public results advertise one-click 40 × 50 mm Hong Kong visa makers, AI background replacement, automatic crop, fixed 472 × 591, 1200 × 1600, 1600 × 2000, or 945 × 1181 pixel exports, 300 or 600 DPI conversions, instant compliance checks, and acceptance-guarantee wording. The official visitor route does not publish one universal edited-output rule, so this page stays requirements-only.

Hong Kong visa photo FAQ

What size is a Hong Kong visit visa photo?

For the paper ID 1003A application, the official form says the image must not be larger than 45 x 55 mm and not smaller than 40 x 50 mm. A 40 x 50 mm print is therefore inside the official range. The online visitor service does not publish one mandatory millimetre or pixel size.

What is the Hong Kong eVisa photo size in pixels?

The official online visit/transit service requires one recent colour photo but does not publish one pixel dimension. It accepts JPEG, PDF, GIF, PNG, or TIF files up to 5 MB each. Use a pixel dimension only if the official filing portal asks for one.

Does the online application require a photo?

Yes. The GovHK online application page marks one recent applicant photo as mandatory. The wider Immigration Department service also says electronic visa services cover visit applications and allow photos and supporting documents to be uploaded online.

Does the photo need a white background?

The official visitor application pages and ID 1003A form reviewed here do not publish a background colour. The separate Hong Kong travel-document photo standard uses a plain white background, but it is not a universal visitor-visa edit permission.

Can PassPhoto replace the background?

No for this reviewed route set. The official visitor, paper-form, online-service, travel-document, and visa-photo example sources do not establish one safe background-replacement workflow for Hong Kong visa or entry-permit photos. PassPhoto keeps Hong Kong requirements-only and does not upload, crop, resize, retouch, replace the background, store, submit, or prepare an edited output.

How large should the head be?

The official visitor form does not publish a head-height range. PassPhoto uses a 64 to 72 percent on-screen framing guide as a preparation aid, not as an official visit visa rule.

Do all travellers need a Hong Kong visit visa?

No. Visa or entry-permit requirements depend on nationality, travel-document type, and intended stay. Check the current Part II table on the Hong Kong Immigration Department website before preparing an application.

Does PassPhoto print or submit the photo?

No. PassPhoto provides requirements guidance and a local ratio check only. You arrange any required printing and submit the original photo file or paper form through the Hong Kong Immigration Department or the office handling your application.

Check visa need and route before preparing a photo

Many nationalities receive a visa-free visit period, while others need advance permission. Confirm the current nationality table first, then follow the online or paper instructions for the route you actually use.

Printing and submission are your responsibility

PassPhoto supplies requirements guidance and a local ratio check. It does not print, submit, process, or guarantee acceptance. Affix a correctly sized print when using form ID 1003A, or upload the required colour file through the official service and follow any later request.
