US Visa Photo Requirements: DS-160 Size and 240 KB Guide

A DS-160 digital visa photo is a square JPEG. The U.S. Department of State publishes a 600 x 600 to 1200 x 1200 pixel range and a maximum file size of 240 KB.

Digital file requirements

Use the original colour image and keep width equal to height. PassPhoto exports the minimum accepted 600 x 600 pixel format when you use the US visa workflow. The US route is crop-only: it does not replace the background, add filters, retouch, or enhance the image.

  • JPEG file format
  • 600 x 600 to 1200 x 1200 pixels
  • Maximum 240 KB
  • Square aspect ratio

Composition and appearance

The photo must be recent, show a full-face view with a neutral expression, and use a plain white or off-white background. Do not digitally alter the applicant’s appearance.

  • Face the camera directly
  • Keep both eyes open
  • Use even lighting without shadows
  • Do not wear eyeglasses

When the upload fails

Follow the instructions shown by the DS-160 system and the embassy or consulate handling the interview. A printed photo may be requested when the online upload is unsuccessful.
