Background and crop only. PassPhoto never changes facial features or identity.

Common requirements
These requirements recur across the current authorised routes reviewed here. When your own checklist is more specific, that checklist takes priority.
Common print size
The current authorised U.S. route states this exact width and height.
Photo age
U.S., India, and Qatar guidance use six months; another location can be stricter.
Background
The wording varies slightly by filing location, so follow the local checklist.
Face framing
Qatar uses 70β80%; India publishes a broader 70β90% range.
Expression
Look directly at the camera, keep the image sharp, and avoid a smile.
Pixels and file size
Portugal does not publish one universal digital limit for every filing location.
Route comparison
Portugal accepts applications through different consular posts and authorised centres. The physical print baseline is similar, but local digital and intake rules are not identical.
United States route
Recent colour, no more than six months old, white or off-white background, full face, non-smiling, printed on photographic paper and attached to the form.
Authorised U.S. guidanceIndia route
No more than six months old, close-up of the head and shoulders, high-quality print, natural skin tone, and no eyewear for Goa-jurisdiction applicants.
Authorised India guidanceQatar route
A 3:4 digital image with a plain light background, six-month recency, clear forward-facing pose, and 70β80% face coverage.
Authorised Qatar guidanceThe Portugal government and authorised-centre sources reviewed here require a plain light background but do not publish a ban on background replacement. PassPhoto changes only the background and crop. It never changes skin, hair, facial geometry, expression, clothing, or identity. Follow a stricter instruction if your own filing location displays one.

Portugal's government explains who can request a short-stay Schengen visa and where to apply. The online visa portal may support application preparation, but the responsible consular post and filing location set the document checklist.
Quantity and recency
The current U.S. route asks for one photo no more than six months old. South Africa guidance describes a second photo handed over separately and uses a three-month recency instruction. This is why PassPhoto does not claim a single copy count or age limit for every Portugal applicant.

A 35 x 45 mm colour print is the clearest current answer for the authorised Portugal VFS route in the United States. The India route publishes a width range of 35 to 40 mm, while the Qatar route publishes a digital 3:4 image starting at 240 x 320 pixels. Follow the location handling your application.
There is no universal Portugal visa pixel size. A 35 x 45 mm print converts to about 413 x 531 pixels at 300 PPI, but that is a print-production conversion rather than a nationwide portal requirement. The authorised Qatar route separately requires at least 240 x 320 pixels in a 3:4 ratio and no more than 120 KB.
The current U.S. VFS route asks for one recent colour photograph. South Africa guidance describes attaching one photo and handing over another separately. Quantity is filing-location specific, so use the checklist for your visa centre or Portuguese consular post.
The U.S., India, and Qatar VFS guidance reviewed here says no more than six months old. The South Africa route publishes a stricter three-month instruction. Use the shortest period stated by your own filing location.
Use a plain light-coloured background. Current U.S. guidance specifies white or off-white, while other routes use plain light-coloured wording. The background should be even, shadow-free, and provide clear contrast with the face and hair.
Yes. The official and authorised Portugal visa sources reviewed for this guide require a light background but do not publish a ban on background replacement. PassPhoto changes only the background and crop, never the face, skin, hair, expression, clothing, or identity. A stricter instruction shown by your filing location takes priority.
Do not assume one rule applies everywhere. The authorised India page says eyewear is not accepted for applicants under the Goa jurisdiction. Other routes focus on a clear, identifiable full face. Removing glasses avoids glare and location-specific rejection risk.
No. PassPhoto prepares a digital background and crop. You arrange any required photo-quality printing and submit the photo through the Portuguese consular post, authorised visa centre, or online route handling your application.
